There are considerable contrasts in the level of development along the central coast as one passes south from Varna to Bourgas. The coast immediately south of Varna has joined in the increasing tourist development in the area while, further south around Byala and Obzor, the tourist industry is still in its infancy. Like its neighbours, however, it is blessed with wide, sandy beaches between rocky promontories and warm, gentle seas that make for ideal summer resorts. The shore-line further south, from Elenite past St Vlas to Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Pomorie, represents one of the busiest sections of the coast, with heady levels of development in progress. The majority of Bulgaria beaches have been awarded the EU Blue Flag for their environmental excellence.

Queen of the resorts is Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag), lies 36 km north of Bourgas and about 90 km south of Varna. It is the largest holiday complex on the Black Sea coast, set on 6km of wide golden sands which sweep round from St Vlas to the north to Nessebar in the south. The Mediterranean climate, with 1700 hours of sunshine from May through to September enjoys an average summer daily temperature of 27oC. The resort offers a very wide variety of facilities and entertainment.

Nessebar, with its picturesque narrow cobblestone streets, 19th century wooden houses and medieval churches, was founded in the 6th century BC. As the major historical site on the coast, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1983. Situated on island connected to the mainland by a causeway, it is one of Bulgaria's most visited tourist spots, attracting nearly a million visitors annually. Further to the south, Pomorie is a growing tourist centre with considerable development in progress.

Overall, the central section around Byala and Obzor has the greatest future development potential, while there are still good opportunities on the coasts around Sunny Beach and Varna.
