Nestled in the Pirin Mountain Park, Bansko has retained its character as a typical small and bustling Bulgarian town, with great restaurants and bars to compliment the modern facilities available in the ski resort. Situated 2 hours drive from Sofia, Bansko lies at an altitude of 925 m, with ski runs at 2000-2500 m and a ski season runing from mid-December to mid-April. The skiing conditions are excellent, with pistes for all types of skiers and total track length of 55km and plans to extend this to 75km by 2006. A gondola lift provides easy access to the ski slopes and the new gondola planned for 2006 has boosted development in the resort considerably. The Pirin mountains are on the World Natural Heritage list and provide excellent opportunities for summer hiking and sightseeing, with many lakes, waterfalls, caves and healing mineral water springs.

Centred around the tall bell tower of Holy Trinity Church, the town itself boasts 120 cultural monuments, museum houses, and a school of icon painting. The region is famous for its cuisine and folklore and Bansko hosts the National Jazz Fest every August.
