Since the Asian financial crisis, Indonesia has restored financial stability, pursued conservative fiscal policies and has embarked on internal reform, building up the confidence of international and domestic investors, and seeking economic growth - GDP is currently estimated at around 5%pa and the Indonesian Rupiah has been stable for several years. Since the former President, Megawati, was succeeded by Yudhoyono, Indonesia’s political landscape is calmer than ever before, and its relations with the West have never been better.

Bali is probably the best known of Indonesia’s 17,000 islands and unlike the rest of the country it is predominantly Hindu. Bali is almost like a principality within Indonesia, with its own buoyant economy, relaxed culture and thriving mix of international residents. Thankfully, Bali was shielded by its sheltered location off the east coast of Java from the tsunami in December 2004, suffering little real damage. There has been substantial foreign investment into Bali and acceptance of the $USD as the currency of business between many establishments anchors and protects the local economy from adverse fluctuations. Easy access by air from airports worldwide has boosted tourism, which is obviously a major source of revenue, with Bali being amongst the most popular of all global destinations. But there is also a vibrant export industry – with large volumes of furniture, clothing, artwork and jewelry shipped worldwide. In general, growth on the island has been steady, and the trend upwards is set to continue. This, of course, is all good news for prospective investors.
