The spectacularly beautiful Rhodope Mountains, the mythical cradle of the
singer Orpheus, offer magnificent pine forests, green meadows and mountain
peaks. While enjoying a mild mountain climate, with strong influence from
the Mediteranean, Pamporovo enjoys snow for 150-200 days a year, with an
average snow thickness of 140-150 cm. The resulting weather is extremely
pleasant and does not change abruptly, so there is little danger of avalanche.
Pamporovo features 25 ski slopes and 17.5 km of alpine tracks of various
difficulty grades and 5 chair-lifts and 13 tows. The ‘Giant Slalom’ and ‘The
Wall’, as well as 3 long-distance cross-country runs, present a
challenge for the most skilled. The resort has more than 100 highly qualified
ski instructors, fluent in several languages, to teach both beginners
and advanced skiers and emergency ski patrol services are available 24
hours a day. Apres-ski attractions include modern hotel and leisure facilities,
shopping areas, bowling alleys, clubs, bars and excellent restaurants.
Pamporovo is also a popular summer resort, with guided walking and cycling tours, horse riding hiking and all major leisure pursuits. There are many interesting tourist attractions in the area, including the ancient town of Smolyan and the nearby medieval Bachkovo Monastery.
Pamporovo is situated some 3 hours from from Sofia and 1 hour from Plovdiv International Airport, which carries many charter and package holiday flights and is expanding with a view to receiving low cost carriers when the open skies agreement comes in force on joining the EU. The new border crossing, some 40km from Pamporovo, will allow access to the Mediterranean coast within 1 hour and will bring many new tourists and skiers from Turkey and Greece.
In February 2005, the Bulgarian Parliament decreed Pamporovo a tourist area of National importance, which will support conservation and limit residential construction. This in turn will ensure that those developments that proceed will be highly sought-after and the level of capital appreciation is projected to increase from current levels of €1,000-1,400/m2 to well over €1500/ m2 over the next two years.
